malaises:

“The Virgin Mary,” Sonia ChoiPartially inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, this piece is a statement on how virginity is viewed in the leading religions of today. Sexuality, in this way, is somewhat restricted because of how people are viewed for their behaviors. It is unforgiving and shows no mercy: one is either viewed as the Virgin Mary or Mary Magdalene, completely pure or soiled. Although the act of sex in itself is a very natural thing, cultural, societal, and moral values alienate us from our bodies in its desires and functions. The relationships we have with our bodies are made complex through this system of endless projection of values. Genitals are made alien to us through mockery, and promiscuity or lack of sexual activity create double standards amongst genders. What is it about sex that makes someone impure, and how do we decide who is a virgin or not?

America, As Imagined by an 18 Year Old Girl- Nicole Anderson

This map serves as an exploration of how reality matches up with our perceptions of reality. The map is based upon how the artist believes the United States of America to look, without any reference. Fabric laser cut into accurate representations of the states and are sewn to conform to how the artist imagined them to be. The map forces reality and our flawed perceptions of reality into the same space. Darker colors represent states that the imaginer feels “confident” of the geography of, while the lighter colors denote states with which she is less familiar.

Aunt Magda
This is a series of Vaginas that I created in the context of my fibers class at Concordia University last year.
Though I do consider myself to be a feminist, I did not especially intent for these pieces to be for the purpose of shocking or disturbing people into thinking of female genitalia. Rather, my goal was to show the beauty of the female sexe in all of its possible forms through the use of materials which reminded me of the delicate nature of the vagina.
Through the use of yarn, string, doilies, fabric and lace I created my little beauties. I was fascinated by the saying that “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”, which pushed young and old women alike to be productive at all times with their hands, which then resulted in activities such as embroidery, sewing, knitting etc. This domain, associated so heavily with women and their domain, which was intended to keep them from thinking of that dark void between their legs and to keep them from touching it, seemed so deeply linked, that I decided to explore it for myself and truly link them physically.
